Description

Please note, our SPF50+ stocks are limited & while stocks last as we phase out to our SPF40.

Stay protected longer and adventure further with our powerful yet gentle natural SPF 40 sunscreen. Made with minimal carefully selected, all-natural ingredients, this broad-spectrum sunscreen shields against both UVA and UVB rays using zinc oxide - the safest and most effective mineral sunscreen available.

Formulated for the wild and the everyday, it creates a physical barrier that not only prevents sunburn and windburn, but also deeply nourishes the skin. Safe for babies, sensitive skin, and anyone avoiding synthetic chemicals, it’s water-free for extra staying power and longer shelf life - making it your perfect companion for every season.

It spreads effortlessly, goes on completely clear, and leaves no greasy residue - just soft, protected skin. Housed in eco-friendly glass jars or aluminium tins, a little goes a long way. A large jar is often all a family needs for an entire summer of sunny adventures.

Compliant with AS/NZS 2604:2021 and ISO 24443 standards, this sunscreen is adventure-tested and family-approved.
Wherever the day takes you - from mountaintops to beaches - you’re covered, naturally.

Want to take it everywhere? Grab one of our empty refill tins to stash in your car, nappy bag, preschool bag, or hiking pack.

Ingredients

Jojoba Oil, Zinc Oxide, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic NZ BeeswaxSPF 40: Jojoba oil, zinc oxide, organic virgin coconut oil, organic unrefined NZ beeswax, glyceryl isostearate (<1%), polyhydroxy stearic acid (<1%)

SPF 50+: Jojoba Oil, Zinc Oxide, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic NZ Beeswax

Directions for use

Make sure to test patch on skin first. If any irritation occurs, discontinue use. Bee products and coconut oil would be the most likely culprits so we'd recommend further allergy testing around these.

The Cancer Society recommendation with any sunscreen is to re-apply every two hours, and after getting out of water due to rub-off.

Becuase zinc oxide forms a physical barrier, not a chemical one, it theoretically works as soon as applied. However legally our label must tell you to wait 20 minutes before going into the sun.

Staying in the shade is the most effective method of sun protection for people of all ages.

Further Info

If you get the sunscreen on your clothing, we recommend using a plain cleaning soap such as our Solid Castile Soap to patch wash.

If you are looking for the sunscreen that used to be called "Regular Sunscreen", we no longer manufacture this one, but the former 'Kawakawa Sunscreen' (now called 'Kawakawa Outdoor Balm') is the same recipe, with the addition of Kawakawa. This makes it skin-healing and mildly insect repelling at the same time. It also uses a more affordable zinc, which can make it a better option for everyday use in the garden, or for sending to preschool.

Sunscreen that keeps you adventuring longer

Safe for skin and planet, our sunscreen is sure to be loved by your whole whānau ❤️

the best!!

Very easy to spread on unlike most natural sunscreens, and not chalky white. Have tested this on my kids in summer and it really works! Recommend the tin because I did drop and break the glass jar one time.

Safe sunscreen

Very happy to be using a product that doesn't contain harmful chemicals and is based on non nano zinc. Spreads well and doesn't appear white on the skin. Proved effective. Also happy that it is not leaving toxic residue in the sea. I consider the product a bit expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which of the sunscreens would you recommend for my baby?

All of our sunscreen recipes only use non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient, which is the only FDA approved sun protecting ingredient from birth to 6 months old, so all of them are safe from birth.

However, our Kawakawa Outdoor Balm uses thicker zinc which can be gentler on the skin. Especially if your baby rubs their eyes with the sunscreen on their hands and such. Generally an SPF of 18x as long as normal is more than enough for even paler babies, due to re-application time, and the fact that they should be kept in shade where possible.

It is however a personal decision, and depends on whether you yourself prefer the higher SPF sunscreen.

If you or your child have eczema, then we would recommend the Kawakawa Outdoor Balm if you don't need the extra SPF, as this is 'skin healing' at the same time as being sun protecting.

The SPF40 uses a much more expensive zinc and has undergone more expensive SPF testing, thus the Kawakawa Outdoor Balm is also the more cost efficient option if this is important for you.

Our whānau personally uses the Kawakawa Outdoor Balm at home around the garden, and the SPF40 when tramping at high elevations or near water where a stronger SPF is preferred.

Is your sunscreen reef-safe?

There is no set particular agreed upon definition on what constitutes a reef-safe sunscreen, however our sunscreens do fit in with the various definitions available, and therefore can be considered reef-safe.

Does your sunscreen use nano or non-nano zinc?

Both our sunscreen options use non-nano zinc.

The SPF50+ did previously state nano, as we were still trying to get a direct answer from the zinc supplier as to whether the zinc fell into nano or non-nano categories.

It is in fact non-nano, but the SPF40 & SPF50+ use a newer zinc, which is how it can go on clear, rather than leaving a white tint.

How long does the sunscreen last?

Generally the Best Before date on the jar is 12-18 months away. We recommend using the sunscreen in the season you purchase it, however zinc doesn't theoretically expire, thus theoretically there is no expiry date as such.

The sunscreen will be at its best texture-wise the season it is purchased in, hence why we recommend using in the season you purchase.

I do often have customers contact me to let me know they are still using jars they purchased off me 3-4 seasons ago with full protection!
